Air Conditioner Blowing Warm Air? 3 Possible Reasons It Is Happening

A common mistake you can make as a homeowner is assuming that an air conditioner blowing warm air is completely broken and needs replacement.  This is actually a problem that is quite easy to repair after doing a little bit of troubleshooting on your own.  Try not to panic, and check these 3 things to help identify the potential problem.

The Thermostat

It may seem obvious, but always check that your thermostat has been correctly programmed.  There are two thermostat related reasons that could cause the air to be warm.  The first is that the fan can be scheduled to run even if the furnace or air conditioner is not running.  This is typically to get the air circulating throughout the house, but it will produce air from the vent that is not nearly as cold as what the air conditioner can produce. 

The second reason could be due to a faulty thermostat that is not triggering the air conditioner's condenser to turn on.  All the settings may be correct, but only the fan is being activated once the temperature crosses the threshold that would turn on the condenser. This can be due to a wiring issue.

Always start by investigating the thermostat, because it can be the simplest repair of these three potential problems.

The Freon

Your air conditioning works by passing Freon through the condenser coil, which is what chills the air.  If there is a leak somewhere in the Freon line, the refrigerant won't be able to make its way through the system, lose pressure, and not reach the condenser coil. 

The system can be pressure tested to make sure that it is holding Freon.  Freon levels can also be tested to make sure that there is enough in the system.

The Condenser Coil

If air cannot pass over the condenser coil, the air won't be able to get cool.  An obstruction can occur when the condenser coil is simply covered with dirt or debris, which prevents air from touching the coil.

You can physically inspect the condenser coil and clean it if it looks dirty.  You can also use a thermometer to find out the temperature of the air before and after it reaches the coil.  If the air is not getting significantly cooler after passing over the coil, that could be your problem.
