As the warmer weather begins to creep in, thoughts of efficient air conditioning systems often come to mind. There are several things you can do now to keep you HVAC running smoothly all summer long while also saving you some money on energy and repair work. Consider doing the following for the dog days of summer:

Run Ceiling Fans

If your home has ceiling fans, be sure to turn them on while your air conditioner is running. It will help circulate the air throughout the room. They can also help draw the cold air downward into the bottom of the room to keep them cooler. This can help your thermostat become more regulated and prevent the unit from turning off and on constantly.

Be Sure The HVAC Condenser is Protected From the Sun

To keep your air conditioner running smoothly this summer, make sure the outdoor unit is situated away from sunlight for as long as possible. The excess heat can wreak havoc on the mechanical aspects of the condenser. Getting the sun away from your unit can be done in a couple of ways. One option is to have the HVAC technician come to your home and move it to a different area of your yard that does not see as much sun. This is the more expensive option, and is very beneficial for your air conditioner. You can also opt to place some type of shade near the unit to help keep the sun's rays away. You can place some lattice work or plant some tall shrubs. However, do not place things too close to the condenser, as the air needs to be able to circulate inside.

Cover Your Windows

As the weather begins to warm and the days grow longer, it is not uncommon to want to open your curtains or blinds to let the natural light inside. However, the sun can heat up a room very quickly and cause your air conditioner to work overtime. If you must have them open, have them open in the early morning and in the evenings after the hottest parts of the day have passed. This way, your air conditioner does not have to work as hard.

Keeping your air conditioner running efficiently during the hot summer months is one of the best ways to ensure it lasts for many years to come. To keep it running optimally, be sure to have it checked by an air conditioning repair technician before the weather gets too warm.
