Household Heating Mistakes You May Be Making

It's natural to want to use your furnace to keep your home feeling warm during the winter. However, many homeowners do not use their furnace properly, which can lead to large heating bills and excessive wear and tear on the furnace itself. Here are some common mistakes you may be making with your home's furnace.

Trying To Heat The Home Faster By Increasing The Temperature

Did you just come home to a house that is cold since the furnace wasn't turned on? If so, your natural instinct may be to turn your thermostat up higher than normal in an attempt to heat your home up faster. You must understand that a thermostat does not work like that since the temperature of the hot air is consistent no matter what the thermostat is set to. If you want the home to be 70 degrees, it will reach that temperature at the same time if the thermostat is set to 70 or 80.

The risk you run is forgetting that the thermostat was set too high, resulting in wasted energy to continuously heat the home to an undesired temperature.

Forgetting About The Thermostat Schedule

Don't make the mistake of keeping your home at the same temperature all winter long. You should definitely be using the thermostat to keep your home at a low temperature when you plan to not be in the home. Even a basic thermostat should have options to program different temperatures for weekends and weekdays, which can help conserve energy when you are at work and away from your home.

Shutting Off The Furnace

You may think that you are doing a good thing by completely shutting off the furnace when you are away or during the night when you are sleeping. The problem with this is that your furnace will have to work much harder than usual to get your home to a warm temperature when you turn it back on. You are much better off setting the thermostat to a lower temperature, which causes the heat to come on in short bursts during the day while you're away or at home when you're sleeping.

These are just a few things that you could be doing wrong with your home's furnace. If you feel like you need your furnace serviced, reach out to a heating service. They can perform an inspection and make necessary repairs for problems that they discover.
