2 Potential Problems With Attempting To Self-Install A Central AC System In Your Home

Whether you are replacing your old central AC system or installing one in your home for the first time, you may have conducted a little research about how the system should be installed. After looking at a few videos and reading online how-to articles, you may be on the verge of deciding to install the unit yourself to save money on installation fees.

However, even though the work may appear as though you can easily do it yourself, installing a central air conditioning unit is something that requires experience. If you decide to go forward with your plans, there are a couple of potential problems that may arise which could wind up costing you more money in the long run.

1. Refrigerant Lines Are at Greater Risk of Being Improperly Installed

One potential problem that could arise when you attempt to install your own central AC unit is that you may inadvertently install the refrigerant lines improperly. These lines run from the unit to your home to supply cold air through the ductwork.

If you do not fully insulate these lines, or if you position the unit so that the lines have to run a great length to reach your house, the unit will have problems keeping up with your home's demand for cold air. Uninsulated lines will absorb heat, and lines that are too long will make the system work harder to push cold air through the additional length.

These issues can cause premature wearing on the unit as well as increase your energy bills.

2. Leaks From the Newly Installed Unit Have a Greater Chance of Occurring and Being Missed

Another issue often caused by DIY AC installation is the greater chance of leaks from the refrigerant lines. If the unit is positioned or handled incorrectly, the lines could become loose or even broken.

While leaking lines are always a possibility, if you have no experience with air conditioning installation, you will not know where to look for them. Even if you were to find them, you may not know how to fix the leaks in a way a professional would.

If you have no experience with installing central air conditioners, you run a high risk of installing the lines improperly and missing any potential leaks caused by incorrect placement and positioning of the unit. Even if you think that you can do the job yourself, you should seriously consider leaving the work to professionals. Contact an HVAC contractor who offers air conditioning installation services to see about having them do the job for you.
